Durango Train Ride

Landscape Architecture professionals from Colorado and New Mexico joined Maglin Site Furniture on Saturday, September 24th for a ride on the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The event included a historic figure from Durango who talked about the history of Silverton, Durango and the train itself, local fauna & flora and other interesting information. A bus ride back to Durango provided more gorgeous scenery, rife with iconic Colorado views of bright yellow and orange fall colors graced with just a bit of snow, awesome peaks and misty clouds and sunshine. Thanks to Maglin for the opportunity.

ASLA Annual Gathering

la-annual-gathering-image-2016-2The 2016 Annual Gathering and Awards Event was held on Friday, September 23 at the Denver Botanic Gardens.  Approximately 125 landscape architects, friends and supporters were in attendance which made this the largest ASLA Colorado event in several years.  The event featured Keynote Speaker Mark Johnson, JSR Awards, JSR Silent Auction, and 21 Design and Planning Awards.   David Sprunt, Vice President of Government Affairs received the Volunteer of the Year Award from President Jeff Zimmermann.  Thanks to all the Annual Sponsors and Event Sponsors for helping make this event a spectacular success.


In Memory of Dick Marshall, FASLA

marshall Those of you who crossed paths with Dick knew him to be a passionate landscape architect and urban designer who has been involved in Denver civic and design issues for the past four decades. Dick lent a keen eye to planning and design work at DHM, and was awarded the greatest distinction of Fellowship in the American Society of Landscape Architecture for his contributions to the profession as a whole. In addition to being a committed citizen and design advocate, Dick was a warm, funny and engaging person, a great family man and a good friend.  He will be missed terribly.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Ducks unlimited (ducks.org), Denver Hospice (thedenverhospice.org), or The Max Fund (maxfund.org), or your favorite charity in Dick's name.

Smart Irrigation Month Proclamation

The Irrigation Association first launched Smart Irrigation Month in July 2005 to increase public awareness of the value of water-use efficiency and water-saving products, practices and services. The initiative is designed to:

  • Educate homeowners, businesses, growers and other users about simple ways to save money and water.
  • Encourage industry firms and professionals to promote smart irrigation practices and technologies to customers.
  • Help water providers minimize peak water use and reduce demands on infrastructure in their communities.
  • Reinforce the role efficient irrigation plays in providing real solutions to today’s water challenges.

All industry professionals and businesses are encouraged to find creative ways to participate in Smart Irrigation Month and to pursue proclamations by their state and municipal governments. Visit the Smart Irrigation Month website for sample proclamation language.

Temple Buell Scholarship

The $30,000 Rotary Temple Buell Ambassadorial Scholarship is awarded annually by Rotary District 5450 to an individual who lives in the seven county Metro area of Denver Colorado, to study architecture and related studies at an accredited Foreign University. The Rotary Temple Buell Ambassadorial Scholarship Committee is in the process of receiving qualified applicants to study abroad for the 2017/18 year.  Information and applications for the Scholarship can be obtained by visiting the District 5450 Website.

In Memory of Ron Bevans

Ron Bevans passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016. He was a long-time leader in ASLA Colorado and served as president in 2001. Ron was a very talented landscape architect and project manager.  He will be terribly missed as a leader and mentor at N.E.S. Inc. and as part of the Colorado Springs design community.
An education fund for Ron's son, Cameron, has been established at Wells Fargo Bank. The family has asked that donations be made to the Cameron Bevans Education Fund, Account # 1699215461, at any Wells Fargo Bank location.

On October 17, 2015 seven design professionals (architects, landscape architects, and an interior designer) gathered along Boulder Creek for some great sketching then headed to higher ground at Settler’s Park to sketch some red rock outcroppings.  The weather was great.  They wrapped up the day on the Pearl Street Mall where they planned future events

The 21st Annual ASLA Colorado Pheasant Hunt took place at Rocky Mountain Roosters in Calhan, Colorado on Wednesday, September 30th, 2015. Attendees included 28 men and women landscape architects, suppliers, contractors and guests. Shown in the photo is Jason Beaner of JBK Landscape who won the Rain Bird sponsored Browning BPS shotgun, the dream of every bird hunter. Raffle sales and sponsorship raised over $600 for the Jane Silverstein Ries Foundation.

Dennis Rubba, of studioINSITE, received his nomination, in Works, from the Colorado Chapter. Rubba has had a lifelong acumen for design and passion for the outdoors. Throughout his career, he has shown a breadth of extraordinary design ability that includes large-scale master planning down to the most intricate design details. With more than 200 design awards and 800 built projects over 30 years, he is nationally known as a masterful landscape architect.

Mary Bates, of DHM Design Group, received her nomination, for Service, from the Florida Chapter. Selfless commitment to leadership and service has made Bates a profound influence on the careers of students and professionals alike. She is a strong mentor and role model who has broadened public awareness of landscape architecture and introduced the next generation to the profession. Note, Mary is now in Colorado.

ASLA COLORADO TEAMS UP FOR MUD LAKE TRAIL RESTORATION

Half a dozen ASLA members teamed up with Boulder County Parks and Open Space and members from the Red Cross on a sunny day in Nederland on Saturday, June 13th.  The group worked together to help restore trails after previous fire mitigation efforts and met afterwards to enjoy lunch together.  A special thanks to Boulder County staff for providing the group with generous amount of refreshments and an insight into the restoration process.

The inaugural ASLA Colorado Sketch Denver event on May 16, 2015 had an incredible turnout and was a huge success.  Thirty six eager urban sketchers participated on Saturday which was twice our anticipated volume!  A big thank you to Brian Nicholson with RNL and Craig Stoffel with DHM for organizing the event along with Rob Colonder with Anova Furnishings for sponsoring the event.  Anova supplied the group with sketch books and umbrellas for the hardy group that stuck it out in the rain and reconvened at Union Station.  We received a lot of feedback and heard a strong desire to do additional events this year.  The organizers will be targeting a few more dates and will update the ASLA Colorado calendar shortly.  We really appreciate everyone’s participation and feedback this weekend, it is your involvement that will allow the Colorado Chapter to continue planning and refining our events.

PESTICIDE BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

Senate Bill SB 15-119 which extends the regulation of pesticide applicators by the Colorado Department of Agriculture until 2024 has been signed into law by the Governor.  ASLA Colorado testified in support of this bill and actively worked to help secure its passage.  Thanks to David Sprunt and the Government Affairs Committee.  For more information on this and other bills in the 2015 legislative session go to: State Bills Colorado.

ASLA Colorado hosted several tours this year as part of Doors Open Denver.  This photo features an “Insider Tour” with ASLA Colorado members Pat Mundus and Mike Weir who guided participants from Washington Park to Cheesman Park.  Features of the Denver Parks and Parkways and key items of historical interest were identified.  Other ASLA tours included: the Golden Triangle (Susan McCabe and Connie Perry), Central Platte Valley Parks (Civitas Team), and Doubling Downtown- Lower Downtown Development (Design Workshop Team).  ASLA Colorado’s booth at Union Station featured brochures, magazines, and copies of the 2015 Colorado Design Journal as giveaways.

GOVERNMENT INDEMNIFICATION BILL SIGNED INTO LAW

On Friday, April 10, 2015 HB 15-1197 was signed into law by Governor Hickenlooper.  ASLA Colorado actively supported this measure and worked with a coalition of several trade and professional groups to draft the legislation and to secure its passage.  The new law basically prevents local governments from assigning liability on construction projects to the designers when the problem was not the fault of the designer.  For a copy of the Act click here: http://statebillinfo.com/bills/bills/15/1197_enr.pdf

The first Denver Creative Social Club event was held on February 25, 2015.  Approximately 20 ASLA Colorado members gathered on a snowy evening at the Dean’s Gallery, University of Colorado Denver where the Dan Kiley Exhibit Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley was on display.  Special thanks to the Cultural Landscape Foundation for sponsoring the exhibit (ASLA Colorado was a financial supporter).

ASLA TESTIFIES IN HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE

David Sprunt, Vice President Government Affairs, testified before the Colorado House Judiciary Committee (in the Old Supreme Court Chamber) on February 26, 2015 in support of HB 15-1197.  This legislation will prevent public sector entities (mostly municipalities) from shifting the financial responsibility of contractors to design professionals (subcontractors) in the event of lawsuits relating to construction contracts.  The measure passed unanimously and was referred to the full House.  The ASLA Colorado Executive Board had previously voted to support the measure.  ASLA Colorado is working closely with our ally the American Council of Engineering Companies of Colorado on this measure. ASLA COLORADO TESTIFIES IN COLORADO SENATE

David Sprunt, Government Affairs Committee Chair, testified before the Senate Agriculture Committee on February 5, 2015 in support of SB 15-119.  This measure reauthorizes the Pesticide Applicators’ Act which expires this year.  The ASLA Colorado Board of Directors voted to support this measure which has broad support from a large coalition of over 30 associations.  For updates on this and other bills click here.

DAN KILEY EXHIBIT OPENS AT UCD

On January 26, 2015 the Dan Kiley Photographic Exhibit opened at the University of Colorado  Denver with special comments by Ann Komara, Kate Kiley, and Chris Dun. Dan Kiley (1912-2012) was one of the most important and influential Modernist landscape architects of his time. The Landscape Architecture Department at the University of Colorado-Denver is hosting the Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley, a traveling photographic exhibition celebrating Kiley's life and career from January 26 to February 28, 2014 in the Dean's Gallery. The exhibition, created by The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF), features 45 vibrant photographs documenting the current state of some of Kiley's most significant designs.   ASLA Colorado is a financial supporter of this exhibit.  More Information>>

Stan Clauson Associates, Inc. welcomes Devon Santy to their firm.  Devon joins SCA as a landscape designer and planner.  He previously worked for Boulder County, where he assisted residents with floor recovery efforts.  With an undergraduate degree in geology and a Master’s Degree in landscape architecture from Cal Poly Pomona, Devon has a wide range of experience including work for the National Park Service, a municipal parks department, and a private landscape architecture firm.

The 20th annual ASLA Colorado Pheasant Hunt took place at Rocky Mountain Roosters in Calhan, Colorado on Thursday, September 25, 2014. Attendees included 34 men and woman landscape architects, suppliers, contractors and guests. The event was dedicated to the late Frank Parker (JBK Landscape) who was an avid hunter and long-time supporter of the hunt. Frank's wife attended the hunt.   Through donations and raffle sales the event raised over $2,100 for the Jane Silverstein Ries Foundation.

COLORADO GEOLOGIC SURVEY ENCOURAGED TO REVISE PUBLICATION 43

ASLA Colorado joined with the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado in a joint letter on September 15, 2014 to the Colorado Geologic Survey encouraging a revision to Publication 43 (2007) regarding landscape drainage and expansive soils. The key issue in the letter relates to the best practice for landscape/site design and construction around foundations, particularly in terms of multi-family and higher density units.

Editor’s Note: On October 8, 2014 the Colorado Geological Survey responded to our joint letter and said “Your suggested edits will be made in the next printing of SP=43, which should occur sometime in the next few months.”  Congratulations to Don Godi and Robb Berg for their work on this.

The Boulder area summer social held on August 14 and hosted by DTJ DESIGN treated members to great local food and drink including from The Post Brewing Co. and Boulder Ice Cream.  Quint Redmond of AgriNETx shared his work in changing world food systems through the concept of Agriburbia that integrates aspects of agrarianism with land development. Mikl Brawner of Harlequin's Gardens shared his extensive of knowledge about local plants and the important role organic gardening plays in our profession.  DTJ provided custom Colorado raffle prizes to attendees.  The event was sponsored by Churchich Recreation.

The second ASLA Colorado Movie Night series was scheduled for July 31 but was moved to August 7 due to the rainy week.  There were 14 hardy souls in attendance at the rescheduled event despite some lingering drizzle and rain.  The featured outdoor film was “Art in the 21st Century”.  The third and final film will be scheduled for September.  Thanks to Landscape Forms and ANOVA for sponsoring this event.

ASLA Colorado had 22 people show up at TAXI's outdoor theater for ACT 1 of the Summer Film Series: "The Human Scale". ASLA CO Elevates Axel Bishop to the Council of Fellows

Axel Bishop, of Design Concepts, received his nomination, for Leadership/Management, from the Colorado Chapter. A leading advocate promoting sustainable landscapes, stormwater management, and learning landscapes in the West, he helped found the Xeriscape Council. He redesigned and codified regional stormwater and drainage systems as naturalized recreational amenities. And he forged new educational frontiers in landscape design for school districts in multiple states. He possesses a unique ability to align citizens and government entities in support of fundamental changes in land design. Many of his ideas are now common practice across America. He also laid the early groundwork to protect the integrity of the practice of landscape architecture for Colorado’s multi-decade re-licensure efforts. His Bachelor of Parks Administration and Landscape Architecture is from Texas Tech University.

City of Boulder’s Pilot “Parklet” Unveiled

On May 28, 2014 the City of Boulder’s pilot “Parklet” project was unveiled in a special ribbon-cutting ceremony.  A six-member volunteer team of Landscape Architects called “Doors Open” won the design competition in March and the construction was conducted May 16-18 with the help of “Coalesce” which is a design and metal fabricator.  For more information on this project contact Sandy Brown at 303-618-9262 or email [email protected].  You can also visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/bouldercoloradoparklet.

In March ASLA Colorado Government Affairs Committee David Sprunt (left) and Executive Director Greg Williams (right) presented Colorado Senate Majority Leader Rollie Heath with the Legislator of the Year award for his work in 2014 on SB 13-161.  ASLA Colorado worked with Senator Heath last year to successfully add reciprocal language to the licensure statute for engineers and architects.  Contact Greg at  [email protected] for more information.
