Website Marpa Landscape Architecture + Construction

Marpa is a landscape architecture and construction management firm based in Boulder, Colorado. We have a 40+ year history of creating meaningful spaces that are deeply in tune with our clients and their land. Our firm was founded in 1974 by Martin Mosko, who trained extensively in Japanese garden design. Applying this approach to the foothills of Colorado, Marpa’s creative process has evolved into the practice of contemplative design and construction.

Rooted in the foothills of Boulder, Colorado, Marpa has designed and built hundreds of projects across the country. Our work spans scales and budgets, from small home landscapes to large private estates, botanical gardens to religious retreats, mixed-use redevelopments to educational campuses. No matter the scale or complexity, whether it be a wildflower meadow or a highly detailed pool, we come back to the concept of the garden — a cultivated space where people can enjoy being outside, where the mind and body can rest, where habitat is restored, and the rawness of the earth and its materials are celebrated.

The garden is not just the finished product, but also the process and experience of creation. We take pride in providing our clients with an experience of utmost care, creativity, and quality — from concept sketch to built project. Marpa’s project management ethos imbues thorough professionalism with a spark of magic, so that the energy of design guides the spirit of the process.

Day by day, we strive for a work-life balance that allows us to remain inspired, so we can continue to produce our best work. We are a productive and rigorous firm that also values flexibility and independence. As a team, we work together in our downtown Boulder office, though we all work from home or remotely from time to time. This position is for someone willing and looking forward to an in-office experience.

Our firm is structured by giving each team member multiple projects for which they are the lead, while encouraging teamwork and collaboration. On commercial or remote projects, we perform as Landscape Architect from design through construction administration. However, we typically transition from “Landscape Architect” to “Landscape General Contractor” on our smaller-scale and residential projects. This is a unique approach that allows us to oversee the construction of our own designs while building an inspired network of builders and fabricators. As a Project Manager, you will manage projects from design through construction administration or management, including working directly with clients, subcontractors, consultants, and the site. This means both a high level of independence and a high level of responsibility. An ideal candidate is eager to dig into this challenge, which we find meaningful and satisfying.

We are currently hiring for a full-time Project Manager, ideally with 3-5 years experience.

If our firm sounds like a good fit for you, please answer the following prompts and questions in your Cover Letter:
• Describe your journey to Landscape Architecture.
• What does meaningful design mean to you?
• In what ways do your teammates learn from you?
• What is something that recently gave you design inspiration?
• Elaborate on a project in which you have dealt with complicated construction aspects to create a design you find inspiring or meaningful.

• Exemplary design and documentation skills, with a high-level working knowledge of Vectorworks and / or AutoCAD and the Adobe Suite.
• Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills, including comfort in communicating with a range of personalities within the high-end design and construction realm.
• Experience in executing design elements from concept through construction, including working with consultants, fabricators, and sub-contractors.
• Experience working in cross-disciplinary project teams.
• 3D modeling and graphic skills.
• Knowledge of landscape materials and design (planting, hardscapes, ground covers, finishes, etc).
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, especially in high-pressure project management situations.
• Ability to make quick, creative on-site decisions (for example, tagging boulders at a quarry, spray painting the layout for a walkway, answering contractor questions, approving hardscape forms, planting and tree layout).
• Ability to drive to sites and perform minor physical work (such as carrying plants during plant-layout) (a personal vehicle and driver’s license is required).
